"With the magic words "Cure Up♥RaPaPa!", two worlds will now be connected!"
I was very curious to see how this season would do the “witch”-theme, something Pretty Cure hasn’t done before and I loved the “witch” part of the story. The Magic World has a lot of interesting stuff going on such as the Magic School, the different magical creatures, etc. Although Pretty Cure usually features magic and other magical worlds, I don’t think we’ve ever seen so much of one as in this season. I kind of wish we could have seen a little more of that. It was a lot of fun to see the characters use magic like that.
Although I loved the setting and many of the concepts and ideas, I didn’t like the storyline with the Linkle Stones and the villains that much. Honestly, most of the time I found it a bit confusing. Mirai and Riko were supposed to search for these Linkle Stones and just found them easily wherever they would go. I felt it was a bit too easy, there was no real challenge for them. Some episodes almost nothing would happen, then suddenly one episode we get a ton of new information. I feel like that could have been planned/explained better.
The villains were the worst to me. I do not always love/like Pretty Cure villains, but at worst they’re just okay. In this case the villains were just so bland and I didn’t like the designs either. Even now after watching all the episodes I can’t even remember what they were trying to do. I just couldn’t bring myself to care about them. The newer villains in the second half were slightly better, but I didn’t really find them interesting either. They were just so disappointing, especially compared to Go! Princess Pretty Cure’s villains. The highlight of the story is definitely the friendship between Mirai and Riko, and later of course Haa-chan as well. Of course Mofurun as well! Mirai and Riko help each other a lot, and when Haa-chan joins them they become like a family. I thought this was really sweet.
Last thing I want to mention is the post-finale episode. Episode 49 was a wonderful finale for this season I thought, so when I discovered that wasn’t actually the last episode I was confused. Episode 50 was just so strange… It had some funny and sweet moments, but it all just felt so completely out of place. The meeting with Cure Whip just made it all weirder. I really wish they had left this episode out.
This season definitely has some really nice designs! My favorite was the school uniform of the Magic School, they just look so cute~ They’re now my favorite Pretty Cure school uniforms. The Pretty Cure designs themselves are pretty cute as well, although they might be a bit over-designed. My favorites were the regular forms and the Sapphire forms, they are so pretty! I thought Cure Felice’s design is stunning, her Alexandrite forms as well. Overall just great designs!
Mofurun is an adorable mascot! In the beginning I thought she looked kind of lifeless, but I got over that pretty quickly. I even ended up buying a plushie of her… I didn’t like Haa-chan’s baby design as much though, I thought it looked a bit creepy (although not as bad as Ai-chan). Many of the Magic sceneries, items and characters looked wonderful and truly magical! I thought especially the Mermaids and their world looked so pretty. The animation itself was pretty average. I never expect any crazy good from Pretty Cure, but I thought it was good enough!
The soundtrack was lovely! The music never felt out of place and always fits the scenes nicely. The transformation music was definitely my favorite, especially Cure Felice’s theme! Of course I loved the opening and ending themes as well... The "Cure Up! Ra Pa Pa!" is super catchy!
I loved the voice acting as well. All voices fit the characters well, my favorites were Mofurun’s and Felice’s voice. I already loved Felice’s seiyuu in Amama to Inazuma so it was a nice surprise to hear her here as well.
Like I mentioned before the characters were definitely the highlight of this season! I loved the main characters, especially Riko. Right from the start she had some great character development thanks to her friendship with Mirai. It was great to see her grow, I just loved her! Mirai was a little disappointing, especially after Cure Flora. She had pretty much no development and was able to do everything easily. She wasn’t annoying though and I did love her friendship with Riko a lot. I loved her friendship with Mofurun as well, I loved Mofurun so much. I also loved the family dynamic the group had once Haa-chan joined. The grown up Haa-chan was very sweet as well.
The side characters were cute as well! I really liked the girls’ classmates from both worlds. I also really liked some of the others such as the headmaster and the mermaids. So many cute characters! The only characters I didn’t like were the villains. There was no character depth and they weren’t entertaining either. They also just never felt like a threat. The only standout character to me was Chikurun, I thought he was pretty cute and I liked his story.
I loved the concept of this season. I really liked the witch theme and the Magic World. There was just so much interesting stuff going on there. The characters were great as well, I really loved them! The soundtrack and visuals were great as well. Not as great I thought was the story itself and the villains. The story was weak and confusing to me, while the villains were completely bland. If this hadn't been a Pretty Cure season I probably wouldn't have finished it. Definitely not the Pretty Cure season you want to start with if you're new to the franchise.
I'm still planning to watch the movie though because I want to see Cure Mofurun...
BONUS: SEKAIICHIHAPPY'S 5 FAVORITE EPISODE PICKS
Episode 7 “The Magic of the Mermaid’s Village! Sapphire’s Thoughts are Restored!” - I loved the mermaids and the whole underwater setting. Lots of cute interactions and the debut of the Sapphire transformation which I also love!
Episode 26 “Everyone Has The Same Thoughts! Ha-chan’s Cookies” - I thought this was a wonderful Haa-chan focused episode. I truly felt that she is just like a daughter to Mirai and Riko.
Episode 29 “A New Magical Tale! Mofuderella is the Star!?” - This episode was hilarious, I loved it. It didn’t make a lot of sense, but it was super funny to see all the characters in the Cinderella story. Honestly the only episode where I actually liked the villains.
Episode 34 “Heart Pounding! First Love Tastes Like Strawberry Melon Bread!?” - An episode that featured the side characters a little more, I really liked that. It actually gave those characters a little more depth, I loved their friendship.
Episode 49 “Goodbye…Magical Users! Come Once Again, Miraculous Magic!” - Just a wonderful finale. Mirai and Riko’s reunion was just so sweet, I really loved that.
